2012 was a really big year for me. Maybe I still haven’t reached “that” age, but every year seems to be so much more monumental than the one before it. Haven’t had a dull year yet. I think 2012 was a landmark year in a lot of categories; school, travel and relationships were all huge. My most memorable feeling from last year is busy. It was definitely not a relaxing year, but I got a lot done, learned a ton and accomplished some hefty goals. I’ve included the highlights of my year below – sorry in advance for all of the images, but it was such a crazy year for me and I carried a camera around with my everywhere!
My very first night of 2012 was spent out celebrating with my favorite girls, Sarah, Amber and Jones. It’s safe to say I didn’t see enough of any of these ladies in 2012 but I’m going to try to see them more in 2013. We went to City Hall and I gave Sarah, my best friend, a new year’s kiss, hehe.
My first travel of the year was for school. I flew off to San Francisco for the first time in my life in March! I fell in love with the rainy city and had a huge adventure. Sarah even flew out for a few days to adventure with me. We ate amazing dim sum, got matching tattoos and might have tried on clown suits in a thrift store.
In April, I took a quick road trip down to Santa Fe for school. I was honored to be able to explore the city, eat amazing food and take incredible photographs. I photographed several wonderful things including a goat being born (haha!) and famous painter, Ed Larson.
I achieved my greatest personal goal yet and became a college graduate in May. I attended Metropolitan State University and received a degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Interactive Design. Graduating school was something I worked very hard for. I paid for school by myself and worked as many as three jobs at one time the whole way through. I think this is by far my biggest life accomplishment to date!
For the first time in my life, I traveled outside of the United States. I went one thousand miles through the country Peru, stopping in cities such as Lima, Paracas, Arequipa, Puno, Cuzco, Isla Amantani and Nazca. I flew over the Nazca ruins, took a boat across Lago Tititkaka to stay with a host family on an island without electricity, climbed a giant mountain, rode a train through the Andes, met many many amazing new friends, explored Machu Picchu and so much more. It was a life altering experience and was the most amazing 15 days of 2012.
I spent a week exploring Los Angeles in July. I took photos of the busy streets in Hollywood, the superb typography everywhere and laid in the sand and played on Santa Monica beach.
I was lucky enough to break into the field of wedding photography in August and September and got to photograph three amazing couples last year!
In October, I moved into a community (2 houses next door to each other that basically share everything), called Sunny Meadows. I now have 10 roommates who have all changed my life and given me support and love through the second half of this year.
I spent a few quick days hanging out in Indianapolis this fall, which included seeing the Kurt Vonnegut mural and hanging out backstage for The Fray’s show there. It was a peaceful and low-key adventure, but an adventure nonetheless!
I spent Thanksgiving in Arizona with my grandparents this year. It was a gorgeous 80 degrees and we celebrated our love and lives with a feast!
Last but definitely not least, I got to spend another whole year with my favorite shih tzu, Snoopy. We celebrated his 7th birthday with some yummy treats and a nice long cuddle nap together.
2012 was a lot of “firsts” for me and was filled with milestones through the whole thing. I’m so happy to have lived through another incredible year and am excited for all the happenings on the horizon!
