Annnnnnd here it is, ladies and gentlemen. Pantone has announced the 2013 color of the year, Emerald. The tradition of choosing a color began back in 1999, when Pantone decided to hold super secret meetings around the globe, where color experts meet for a few days every year, present their ideas about the color for the upcoming year and deliberate and debate over what color is most appropriate. This color choice has come to tie in heavily with fashion, beauty and interior decorating design trends.
Honestly, I never knew it was such a big deal. Although admittedly I also never knew that Pantone choose a color of the year until 2011 either. It’s intriguing though. Designers have been known to use the color of the year in their designs and Sephora even launched a beauty line last year in the Tangerine color (I wanted to get the brush set so bad, but $60 wasn’t in my brush set budget… sigh).
The colors are chosen based on lots of social research from Pantone and the color experts it consults. For example, a yellow might be chosen in a year after a major tragedy to help cheer up the world. It’s kind of brilliant in my mind. Sure, it’s cheesy, but it’s hard to argue that seeing a cheery color around the world a little more could actually do damage. Thanks Pantone for having the world’s back!
According to the Pantone 2013 press release, “Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2013, including Tracy Reese, Nanette Lepore, Barbara Tfank, NAHM and Marimekko, are incorporating Emerald into their spring collections. Balanced yet sophisticated, Emerald enlivens all colors in the spectrum and will continue to make a statement beyond spring and summer into fall and winter.” Excited yet?
Apparently emerald accentuates all eye colors, meaning we can probably expect a ton of emerald eye shadows coming out this year. Pantone is exclusively releasing their line through Sephora again this March. Pantone is also teaming up with jcpenney to bring emerald colored home decor in February.
Now for my honest opinion. I can’t stand emerald. Or couldn’t, rather. I don’t like jewel tones. Especially green or purple jewel tones. It’s just not me or my personality. I might branch out and get that brush set this year though if Pantone and Sephora create one again. That’s emeraldy festive enough, right?
For those who do love emerald, congrats on a whole year of it!
“Radiant, lush, green. The color of 2013.”
